US Election 2008 November 6, 2008

Last night many of you will have seen, heard and read about the electrifying US Presidential Election which has seen the election of America’s first black President, Barack Obama.

Tens of millions of new voters signed up to vote for the very first time, young and old, black and white – all wanting to particpate in an election that marks a watershed in US politics and indeed a watershed for the wider world.

The new President-Elect is promising a new era of American leadership and has been termed by Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State under George W. Bush as likely to be a transformational president. But what strikes me has been the massive turnout (the highest in decades) and the way the people have been energised and empowered by politics. Maybe this is just American campaigning, but what do you think would help engage people in Britain and Havering on the issues of the day?

Best wishes,

Michael

I totally agree Cllr. White, the news is outstanding. If I was an American, he would have got my vote. A shame that GWB wasted eight years.

Hopefully the issue of Mr. Obama’s colour will not be the “biggest” thing in US history, but, as Dr. King stated “the content of his character”.

You write about our politics and how to “engage” the people of Britain and Havering.

For me it should be at grassroots level common sense politics. I don’t appreciate public expenditure being wasted.

Trust me, when the public are truly sick to death of the politicians and Local Cllr’s , they let their feet do the talking, straight to the polling stations.

Regards.

T. Murphy.
